In many parts of the five boroughs of New York City and especially in the heart of Times Square, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris supporters flooded the city streets after election results were announced. New Yorkers played music from their cell phones and danced and sang; drivers even slowed down, lowered their windows and honked their horns in exhilaration. Biden and Harris supporters, overjoyed with excitement and delight, held flags, campaign posters and homemade signs. As the crowd of people filled the streets it noticeably became a party in the big city and a party in the USA.
Whether outdoors or indoors, on the warm sunny day of November 7th, people celebrated the victory – former Vice President Joe Biden became their next president and California Senator Kamala Harris became their next vice president. This election win will be remembered by the entire Democratic party, who waited patiently for four years to hear “Joe Biden is elected the 46th president of the United States.”

Biden won Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes which brought him to 279 and the win. Biden defeated the incumbent President Donald Trump, who received just 214 electoral votes at the time. During President-Elect Biden’s victory speech in Wilmington Delaware he said, “I seek to be a president who seeks not to divide but to unify, who doesn’t see red states and blue states, only sees the United States.” Biden spoke to Trump supporters and said, “All those of you who voted for President Trump, I understand the disappointment tonight, I’ve lost a couple times myself but now let’s give each other a chance.”

After President-Elect Biden’s speech, a spectacular display of fireworks lit up the sky. Coldplay played, “A Sky Full of Stars,” a tribute to Beau Biden, President Elect Biden’s deceased son, who loved the group.
The win for Harris is historic as she became the first woman and woman of color, African American and South Asian-American, to become vice president of the United States. Vice President-Elect Harris thanked her supporters and said, “While I may be the first women in this office, I will not be the last because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a county of possibilities.”
Harris said of President-Elect Biden, “He had the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exists in our county and select a woman as his vice president.” As the crowd cheered loudly she continued, “You chose hope and unity, decency, science and, yes, truth. You chose Joe Biden as the next president of the United States of America.”
President-Elect Biden and Vice President Elect Harris will be sworn in on January 20, 2021.
