Latinos Beyond Reel

The documentary “Latinos Beyond Reel” addresses the depiction of Hispanics on the big screen, treatment of illegal immigration and negative stereotypes. The film argues that presentation of Latinos in the arts has broad implications. In  one scene, an interview with Latinos under the age of 10, none of the children can remember good or bad Latino film characters.

Filmmakers Miguel Picker and Edwin Pagan, along with associate producer Ronelle Rodriguez Torres, discussed the program at The Bronx Documentary Center in February.

“We need to organize our community to be more supportive in backing independent film projects,” Picker said. “Supporting Latin films will enable us to educate our community.”

Miguel Picker said if people follow the motto, “Each one reach one, each one teach one,” the world will be a better place.

The film reviewed various roles given to Latino actors, including the bandito, the Mexican drug dealer and the “firecracker” housewife.

The film cited YouTube clip “Beaner Crossing the Border” as an example of how the media passes judgment on illegal immigrants in America. In that video,  teenagers imitate Mexicans crossing the border and the police trying to arrest them.

Audience member John Rosado from the South Bronx said, “It made me angry and also made me realize there was something I can do to make a difference.”

Jessie Velez, also of the south Bronx, said he feels like Americans are being brainwashed because Latinos are portrayed as drug dealers and killers.

Latinos from all backgrounds need to stick together to combat stereotypes, said another audience member and Bronxite Rick Villegas.
