Castle Hill Nixes “Hot Sheet” Motel

State Senator Jeff Klein and Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda rallied with community members against what they said could become a "hot sheet" motel.

Some residents complained that 2338 Bruckner Blvd is not a good location for a hotel because it’s too close to their homes, in some cases, literally in their backyards.

The group pointed to the lack of nearby businesses or restaurants which would require such accommodations as evidence that the Days Inn could ultimately become a seedy locale. It is, however, located conveniently by the freeway.

“Any motel that would provide day rates creates the potential for a 'hot sheet motel' and the conditions for potential illicit and illegal activity that could hurt this otherwise strong community," said State Senator Jeff Klein.

During the press conference, Bronx officials announced that they will be proposing legislation that would require communities be informed before construction of hotels could begin in Bronx County.

"Members of this community are telling developers that if you want to come into our neighborhoods they have to be at the table," said Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda. "I hope to see the Department of Buildings (DOB) thoroughly examine the concerns that have been brought to their attention and come to a resolution on this matter."

At this time, the DOB has issued a stop work order. Signs at the site say the hotel is set to open in 2016 but Fernando Panate, a resident and member of the Castle Hill Betterment Association, said the group plans to fight until they find an alternative that is better suited to the community.
