Essence Magazine held its 2nd annual Street Style Block Party in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn to kick off New York Fashion Week. It was a day to wear your Sunday best outfit and express your sense of style.

Women, men, and children alike crowded underneath the Manhattan Bridge Archway to enjoy music, fashion, and food. ESSENCE Magazine is an African American women’s magazine but the block party attracted people of all ages and races to celebrate a universal bond — fashion.

One of the many highlights of the day was the fashion show. Models and lucky fashionistas selected from the crowd graced the runway, showing off designs from local designers and vendors. DJs Olivia Dope and Tiff McFierce kept the crowd dancing and singing from start to finish.

The party included performances by singers Andra Day and singer Mel B from UK’s Spice Girls. Actress Gabrielle Union also made a few appearances.

ESSENCE Magazine used the event to sign women sign up for their “Beauty Box,” a subscription box that comes with travel sized beauty items meant for everyday use. Even though its debut is not until October, it was not difficult to get women to sign up.

SheaMoisture had an on-site beauty bar where attendees received skincare consultations, tips and tricks to taking care of hair, and massages. Home Depot had a closet redesign give away and offered tips on organization.
