Yankees Clinch Third Straight AL East Title

Once again, the Yankees proved why they are the greatest sports team in Major League Baseball. Playing their first game of a double-header with the Tampa Bay Devil Ray, the Yankees earned a post-season berth.

Yankees clinched the playoffs for the third straight year on September 21 with a 4-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Yankees came back to win it in the bottom of the eight inning when Robinson Cano hit a two-run double.

The fans began to clap once Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” the signature song of Yankee closer Mariano Rivera, began to play. Rivera crossed the mound and closed the game with three easy outs.

Yankees fans went wild, shouting and clapping for the victory that will take them to their 17th post-season appearance. The players gathered in the mound and shook each other’s hands. However, they promised not to celebrate until winning the division.

The race for the American League East division ended yesterday night in the second game of the double-header. First, the last place Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-4. Second, veteran Jorge Posada delivered a pinch-hit two run single that helped the Yankees win 4-2. These events allowed them to clinch the division title.

The Yankees still have eight games remaining for the 2011 season. They end the last home series of the regular season against their rivals, the Boston Red Sox..
