Slideshow: Holiday Trains at NYBG

By Lorraine Acosta

Many New Yorkers find that the experience of trains in the city is unpleasant: ear-splitting noise, elbow-to-elbow rush hour crowds and the occasional nutter muttering. For those jaded straphangers, the annual Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden is a breath of fresh air. In its 20th year, the train show has become an event treasured by families across The Bronx and beyond. Trains run through a model New York City filled with replicas of landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the original Yankee Stadium and Radio City Music Hall.

“This is so cool,” said Marcus Martinez, 24, who took his nephew to see the show. “I love the trains and the buildings. They’re so unique.”

The New York Botanical Garden is known for its fantastic floral exhibits and the landmarks are constructed using bark, leaves and nuts.

Lisa Reyes, 26, who has been bringing her son Ryan for the past two years said, “This is a tradition for our family. We bring our son every year because he loves the trains, especially Thomas the Tank Engine.”
