The summer is approaching rapidly and now is the time to get back in shape! Programs like the Biggest Loser at Lehman College are one way to motivate students. The Biggest Loser program is a competition open to all students aiming to lose weight and adopt healthy habits. Interns majoring in exercise science, dietetics, foods and nutrition assist the students in their diets and exercise programs.

There are also classes like the tropical dance movement of Zumba, which contains different choreography from salsa, merengue, hip- hop, reggae, belly dancing, and soca. When word got around campus that Zumba was being offered in the Apex, many students that weren’t in The Biggest Loser program joined. “I’m not part of the Biggest Loser Program, but I love Zumba because it is not intimidating,” said Ada Blanco.

Others agreed that it was a nice alternative to working out in the gym. “The fitness center becomes overwhelming and Zumba is great because many Hispanic natives and islanders can recognize fun rhythms while getting fit,” Danielle Ortiz said.

“Zumba gives me a positive state of mind, a great vibe and keeps me fit,” said Adavi Gutierrez.

Melissa Weiss said, “The program was a total success, it was always packed.”

The Zumba class only lasted a few weeks, but instructors and participants are hoping the school will fund another run. “People can go to the Life Center and request the program,” said Instructor Carolina Adames.

“I would love to continue teaching but we need approval, and get paid,” said another instructor, Tania Jean.
